Every so often, in the excitable talk about the reunification of Ireland, somebody throws a bucket of iced water into the mix. The latest such contribution was a report last week by two of this country’s most eminent economists. Its conclusion – or so the reporting of the report would have us believe – is that a united Ireland would “cost” €20 billion a year, for 20 years.
