US biomaterial and polymer company Ortec will create up to 110 jobs following the establishment of its European headquarters in Newcastle West, Co

Limerick.

The South Carolina-based firm, which makes custom materials for medical devices, pharmaceuticals and other health-related industries, will begin manufacturing at a leased property but plans to double capacity at the 13,000 square foot facility in the coming months, subject to planning permission.

The jobs, which will be highly-skilled posts in engineering and science, will come on stream as the plant becomes operational.

Ortec’s first investment outside the US "is a strategic part of our global expansion,” Ortec's senior vice president Christopher Brotherton said. “Bringing the project to this stage has required a great deal of collaboration. We have received tremendous support fromIDA Ireland, Limerick City and County Council, Shannon Properties, and a multitude of local professional advisors.”

Jobs Minister Mary Mitchell O'Connor welcomed the announcement, noting: "These are exactly the kind of high quality graduate jobs that we seek to attract and it is a strong vote of confidence for Ireland and our regions that Ortec has decided to establish its European headquarters here.”
