Electricity bills to go up as Poolbeg in line for guaranteed minimum prices for green energy
The controversial Poolbeg incinerator will get taxpayer subsidies for the electricity it produces for up to 15 years.
The money will be collected from a green energy levy on consumers’ electricity bills, which is due to be increased this year from €60 to almost €80 annually.
The public service obligation (PSO) levy currently mainly covers the cost of subsidising energy from wind farms to help reduce the state’s carbon emissions.
