Nuclear plants may be state-aided under new EU Commission rules

The European Commission is seeking to change state aid rules which would enable EU governments to subsidise nuclear power plants directly, according to a leaked commission document released by anti-nuclear campaigners.

If approved after a public consultation in the autumn, it would make it easier for countries which want to build more nuclear plants - such as France and Germany - to provide support to the plants' operators.
