In his final years as host of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart grew increasingly frustrated and exhausted by the US political system. Seeing Donald Trump run for president forced his hand in bidding farewell to the beloved series. Now, almost six years later, he is returning as the presenter of a new late-night current affairs programme titled The Problem With Jon Stewart. Intriguingly, he has thrown his old playbook out the window and hired a new team with little experience of writing for a comedy show. What the freshly minted staffers offer, he says, are “talent, intelligence and a perspective” he doesn’t have. JMB
