The tradition of the once-a-decade passion play in Oberammergau started with a vow taken in 1633, during the 30 Years’ War

Until last Friday, a question mark hung over the production of the 2020 Oberammergau passion play, scheduled to premiere on May 16 and run until October 4, a tradition which began as a result of fears about the spread of the plague in Bavaria. As of Friday morning, the news was in: the event will be postponed until summer 2020, just the third time in its many centuries of existence that its agreed date has been stymied.
