Editorial: Ireland must not rise to the latest piece of rancid Brexit bait

The urge by Brussels and Dublin to respond to Britain‘s gunboat diplomacy in kind should be resisted

Nowhere has British prime minister Boris Johnson’s “cake and eat it” deception been exposed more pitilessly than on the island of Ireland.

Before the Brexit referendum in June 2016, some ardent British supporters of Britain’s departure from the EU fetched up in Dublin to promote their dubious cause. When asked about the Irish dimension to Brexit, they had a stock response: “Don’t worry, nothing will change.”
