Taking Office to the cloud

After a few false starts, Microsoft is taking its customers to the cloud with a SaaS (software-as-a-service) version of the productivity suite that made it so successful in the old IT world

Back in 2010, when Microsoft announced it was relaunching its online application suite, the cumbersomely named Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS), as Office 365, expectations were not that high. Why would they be? Earlier tweaks to BPOS had done little to convince anyone that Microsoft was any closer to succeeding with the SaaS (software-as-a-service) model pioneered by Salesforce.com a decade earlier.
