As Ireland sets ambitious renewable energy targets for 2020 and 2030, Aoife Valentine considers how industry can play its part

With 90 per cent of Ireland’s energy still sourced from fossil fuels, it’s looking unlikely we will meet our 2020 renewable energy targets. It was an ambitious ask — that Ireland would produce 16 per cent of all energy consumed from renewable sources. While 2017 was a record year for renewables on the Irish electricity grid, at the end of the year, just 10.6 per cent of energy consumed in Ireland came from renewables, according to a report by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI).
