With technology allowing more financial transactions to take place online, Aoife Valentine considers the possibility of a cashless Ireland

Most of us hold more computing power in the palms of our hands every day than we really need. Two thirds of Irish people own smartphones and tablet penetration in Ireland is at 40 per cent, and that’s just mobile devices. You can catch up on your email, put in an order with a supplier or send a payment halfway around the world with a few taps of a screen, all while still on the commute to work. That’s the theory, anyway.
