Smart speakers will be going places if Amazon cracks portability problem

The tech giant is attempting to break its digital assistant’s dependence on the mains, but the new Echo Input’s weight and battery life will be key

Amazon’s Echo Input: the company is working on a portable version that has the potential to change the face of the smart-speaker market

With one experiment in India, Amazon may be about to redefine the smart speaker business forever.

Until now, aside from a couple of small efforts that failed immediately, smart speakers have been wholly dependent on a mains connection. To use one, you had to plug it in.

That’s because none of the big-brand speaker-makers opted for battery power. The reasons are pretty straightforward: batteries add weight and having sufficient juice for extended usage isn’t easy....
