What prompts an artist to decide on subject matter? William Scott explained it so: “I invariably find that the thing I draw is at my elbow, it is out of the window, or has been standing at my front door for a long time.” Still-lifes of everyday objects have been part of the art canon for centuries, but Scott breathed new life into the genre with his ground-breaking abstract approach. Seen by his eye, kitchen paraphernalia – pots, pans, bowls and mugs – are endowed with an austere beauty, very much in tune with contemporary minimalist tastes.
