Retailers are discounting to compete with online trade

Reports that the Irish retail market has entered recession are not reflected in the views of property consultants who are forecasting continuing growth in retail rents and values.

Last month, Retail Excellence Ireland (REI), which represents retailers, said the Irish industry is contracting with Q1 2017 delivering the third consecutive quarter of decline.

“Sectors such as footwear, childrenswear and jewellery all struggled over the period,” said chief executive David Fitzsimons.
