Why rent certainty doesn’t work

It is no wonder that landlords are raising the rent at every legal opportunity: not to do this risks reducing the value of their investment over time

When we hear that rent controls (often termed the more sanitised ‘rent certainty measures’) aren’t working, it’s only fair to wonder why they are being done at all, and what end they serve.

They are a manipulation of market prices; academics and practitioners alike don’t see them as being a positive thing outside of the usual cohort who support them even in the face of factual data proving their ineffectiveness.
