Marlene Dietrich’s ‘short snorter’ – a collection of autographed banknotes which is due to go on auction in New York next month
In the 1920s, Alaskan bush pilots started the tradition of the ‘short snorter’, a banknote signed by people travelling together on an aircraft, ‘snort’ being slang for a stiff drink, ‘short’ being less than a full measure. When out carousing, an airman failing to produce his short snorter had to buy his colleagues a round of drinks.
