Karl Deeter: 'Every part of construction has some complex issue to face'

Deeter will be speaking at the 2016 Construction Industry Federation conference

Karl Deeter: "I used to be (very long ago) a dog trainer."

What's your name?

Karl Deeter

What position do you hold?

Compliance Manager first and then operations & PR

How long have you held the position?

12 years

What are your day to day responsibilities?

It depends on the day, usually operations is more time consuming day to day but compliance is more critical to get right so at certain times that’s all consuming. After that there is promotion of the firm and some advisory work and research (if anybody wants to hear about 300 years of Dublin house prices come along to the Statistical and Social Inquiry Society of Ireland meeting in the Royal Irish Academy at 18:30 the 20th of October to hear about that research which I was involved in).

What is your professional background?

Financial advice covering insurance and credit as well as compliance are my main professional areas.

Tell me about yourself away from work?

Never a spare or dull moment is probably the best description. With two boys and a daughter on the way I’m always busy and family is my main focus out of work. I help train boy’s gymnastics at Grange Gymnastics in Santry which turns 100 years old this year, keeping fit is important so gym work is also part of my regular week. I play guitar and upright bass in a few different bands and play a show or two every week. Then there’s writing a weekly column at the Sun on Sunday and the property section of the Sunday Business Post. Last year I wrote a book with Jill Kirby on personal finance, there’s another one or two in the pipeline and as mentioned before there is some generalist research which often means putting a little time aside out of hours. The trick so far is to sleep less than other people and don’t watch TV, if either of those things give way about three of the things on my list will immediately die off.

Tell us something very few people know about you?

I used to be (very long ago) a dog trainer.

You are speaking at the 2016 Construction Industry Federation conference. What is your talk about?

I have it easy this year, as a panellist I just get to expound on whatever my thoughts are on the day!

What challenges do you see for the construction sector?

Almost everything, it’s hard to say that there is any section that doesn’t have complex issues facing it in some manner or other.

Where would you like to see the industry in 10 years time?

Something that you could look at and call ‘normal’ without lots of caveats would be nice.

Karl Deeter will be appearing at The Construction Industry Federation Annual Conference on October 6 at Croke Park in Dublin. Seehttp://www.cifconference.
