Roy Lancaster was 15 when his interest in gardening was piqued. In his latest book, the 79-year-old reflects on a life of plants

You could say the now renowned plant hunter, writer, gardener and broadcaster Roy Lancaster’s career started with narcotics. His interest in plants was piqued when at the age of 15, he found a strange plant growing in a potato patch in an allotment near his school. The specimen was sent off to a museum in London for identification.
