Getting lost in the former west
The beauty and brutality of old-time life in the west of Ireland is captured in works by Henry, Keating and Yeats at auction this week
Paul Henry was captivated by the tranquil beauty of the west, while Sean Keating’s focus was its inhabitants whose fate was determined by the vagaries of the elements. At Adam’s this week, there are splendid examples of both.
Henry’s Cottages in a Landscape is typical of his paintings which crossed the Atlantic as travel posters and brought thousands to our shores to see the West of Ireland for themselves, 34.5 x 39.5cm (€60,000-€80,000).
