Sapphire and diamond ring
Adam’s sale has the expected complement of precious stones, but the lots that stopped me in my tracks are of the prettiest crystal in the quartz family, blue chalcedony. Google it and you’ll find reams of questionable information on how the ancients (Egyptians, Greeks and Native Americans) perceived its magical powers. According to one source, lawyers and politicians might benefit from touching it to the tip of their tongue while listening to their opponents to enhance their counter-arguments. Let’s hope Hillary Clinton owns a piece. That aside, it is prized for the sheer beauty of its blue translucence. Choose from a necklace comprising 35 chalcedony beads interspersed with brilliant-cut diamond links by Italian designer Margherita Burgener (€3,500-€4,500), or a pair of chalcedony and diamond earrings, each blue bead suspended with a graduated pavé-set diamond cap and mounted in 18 carat gold (€700-€1,000); better still, have both.
