The passage of time has a way of pulling the wool over our eyes. Think of all those pristine white Greek marble statues – truth to tell, their original ancient Greek owners wouldn’t recognise them. Under ultraviolet light, pinpricks of pigment that have survived through millennia can be detected, proof that they were originally painted over in technicolour.
