Underground, a print by Colleen Browning (€100–€200)
Sale offers 265 works, with bidding ending tomorrow
Now in her late 80s, Colleen Browning was the one who got away, the girl from Cork who went west, a shrewd move as her particular talents might not have gone down well in Ireland circa 1950. She found success in New York where her magical realist canvases won awards and were exhibited at prestigious museums such as Moma and the Whitney. A print of Manhattan’s subway in de Vere’s current online auction shows her talent for spearing the intangible element of threat that is part and parcel of urban existence. Entitled Underground, it measures 48x91cm (€100–€200).
