If a house is not a home, then a garden without bulbs is not a garden at all, says Dutch plant expert Jacqueline van der Kloet

If you went out for a fancy meal, and weren’t offered a starter, you might consider it a gastronomic gaffe. A garden without bulbs is similarly lacking - if you skip straight to the main course of herbaceous perennials, you have missed out on a tantalisingly colourful and satisfying introduction to the gardening year. Expert plants woman Jacqueline van der Kloet goes so far as to say a garden without bulbs is not a garden at all.
