On Monday last, the grand dames ruled the roost at Whyte’s Important Irish Art sale. Prompting applause in the room, Sir William Orpen’s 1926 Portrait of Gladys Cooper soared over its estimate of €80,000-€120,000 to realise €175,000, and Sir John Lavery’s 1910 Bacchante, a portrait of Ruby Peto, made €135,000 against an estimate of €60,000-€80,000.
