In her fifth-floor office in the Leinster House 2000 building, I tell Mary Lou McDonald that I have been watching a programme recently about a high-profile female leader who is under pressure, dealing with dissent in her organisation and under intense media scrutiny. So, has she been watching the third series of the Crown on Netflix?

McDonald laughed. “That’s an unlikely parallel. I thought you were going to suggest I should audition for it,” she said....
