The repeal of the Eighth Amendment and the exoneration of Maurice McCabe were two high points in a year otherwise memorable for the housing crisis, the CervicalCheck debacle and the ongoing slow-motion disaster that is Britain’s EU departure

The political year was dominated by Brexit from start to finish. After a sustained lobbying campaign by the government and its diplomatic service, the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier insisted on including a backstop in the draft withdrawal agreement to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland. The EU leaders endorsed that agreement. So did the Dáil.
