The industry response to Sinn Féin’s rent reduction and freeze Bill, details of which were revealed earlier this month, was as swift as it was predictable.

Giving hard-pressed renters a break would make the housing crisis worse, the sector claimed. Semi-professional landlords would exit the market. Institutional investors would delay projects. Supply would dry up, and everybody would be worse off. At best, we were told, a rent reduction and freeze would be a distraction ...
