Varadkar had said publicly that people were using fake beards to make false welfare claims
It has emerged that Taoiseach Leo Varadkar’s officials removed from an official statement his claim that “tens, if not hundreds, of millions” of euro were being lost to welfare fraud.
Internal emails also reveal that software for tracking identity fraud does not record how many people committed such fraud by wearing fake beards. Varadkar had said publicly that people were using fake beards to make false welfare claims.
