The nation is left horrified – again – as elderly patients are left waiting on trolleys, but what is needed to end this scandal once and for all?

First it was a 91-year-old. Then an 87-year-old. And then a 93-year-old. Their personal stories shone a light on the hospital system, putting real people behind the hospital overcrowding figures consistently highlighted by nurses and doctors.

On Tuesday it emerged that a 91-year-old man with advanced Parkinson’s disease had to endure 29 hours on a hospital trolley in a severely congested emergency department at Tallaght hospital in Dublin.
