In late 2013, Peadar Tóibín sat across from Fianna Fáil TD Timmy Dooley in Bewley’s Café on Grafton Street in Dublin. Tóibín was coming to the end of a six-month suspension from Sinn Féin after defying the party’s position on abortion, and Dooley was sussing out whether he would consider joining Fianna Fáil, a party that had allowed a free vote on abortion.
