Tóibín's departure from Sinn Féin was inevitable after he so openly campaigned against repeal in last May’s referendum, appearing on RTÉ’s Prime Time to debate with Minister for Health Simon Harris

In late 2013, Peadar Tóibín sat across from Fianna Fáil TD Timmy Dooley in Bewley’s Café on Grafton Street in Dublin. Tóibín was coming to the end of a six-month suspension from Sinn Féin after defying the party’s position on abortion, and Dooley was sussing out whether he would consider joining Fianna Fáil, a party that had allowed a free vote on abortion.
