The prospect of another week of strike action by the country’s 2,100 medical scientists had been concentrating minds in government.

Their one-day strike last week led to the cancellation of 14,000 hospital outpatient appointments due to the absence of laboratory results on medical tests. The disruption would have been doubled by two days of strike action this week.
