State in scramble to find room for refugees as system strains

Croke Park, disused barracks and school halls are all being considered, as Ukrainian embassy warns those fleeing war that Ireland cannot guarantee homes

In a flurry of phone calls last Friday evening, government ministers signed off on a range of emergency measures to address the worsening refugee accommodation crisis.

Roderic O’Gorman, the Minister for Integration, admitted earlier this month that the state could not guarantee that newly arrived refugees would not have to sleep rough.

He met Larysa Gerasko, Ukraine’s ambassador to Ireland, last week and after the meeting, the embassy issued a statement on Facebook.
