Sinn Féin has not ruled out supporting independent senator and former British soldier Gerard Craughwell’s bid for the presidency.

Craughwell and fellow independent senator Joan Freeman are both seeking meetings with Sinn Féin about the possibility of securing the party’s support in order to bea presidential candidate later this year.

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald indicated last week the party would run a candidate against Michael D Higgins if, as widely expected, the President seeks a second term. But the party has not ruled out throwing its support behind one of the independents seeking a nomination. A decision is likely to be taken at a Sinn Féin ard comhairle meeting this Saturday.
