Michael D Higgins announced last Tuesday that he hopes to secure a second term in office. Any election will be his to lose, but with others jockeying for position, there’s always the chance of an upset on the road back to the Áras

It was a week when a popular national icon finally dealt with all the speculation about his intentions with a clear and firm statement that ended months of rumours and addressed those people who had been insisting to him that he should go for it.
