Measure faces significant opposition in Seanad as senators unconvinced over lay majority

Minister for Transport Shane Ross’ reforms of the way judges are appointed are expected to be scuppered by senators.

The Judicial Appointments Commission Bill, which will see non-lawyers outnumber their legal and judicial counterparts on a new selection body, is facing significant opposition in the 60-seat Seanad.

Ross, who has championed the reforms, has contacted a number of senators asking them to back the bill.
