Revenue investigating nearly 170 firms in probe of self-employed

Travel expenses, business costs and subsistence claims come under scrutiny

The Revenue Commissioners are still investigating close to 170 companies under a long-running nationwide probe into the tax affairs of self-employed contractors.

Revenue officials have been investigating the expenses and subsistence claims of self-employed professionals who operate through their own companies since 2013, under its so-called National Contractors’ Project.

The investigation grew from concerns that contractors were overstating their travel and business expenses in a bid to reduce their tax bills.
