Budget 2016 featured a number of changes in relation to indirect taxation

In the only specific tax increase announced in the budget, the excise duty on a packet of 20 cigarettes was increased by 50 cents (including VAT), with a pro-rata increase on other tobacco products with effect from midnight on October 13, 2015.

The Minister for Finance announced that this will have the effect of raising €61.4 million in a full year. No changes were made to excise duty rates on the other ‘old reliables’, namely alcohol, petrol or diesel.
