Given that many of the candidates are Brexiteers, the obvious danger for Ireland is that any new prime minister will need to be seen as someone who can take action and break the deadlock

None of the potential candidates for the leadership of the Conservative Party would be known – or would want to be known – for their sympathies towards Ireland, the North or the backstop. They will all have to try to differentiate themselves in a crowded field and a stance on Ireland will hardly be high on their lists.
