Merkel’s visit here is a significant moment because, despite being in the twilight of her political career, she retains enormous influence at the top of the EU

It was one of the few feel-good moments during the Irish football team’s struggles at the Euro 2012 championships in Poland. A group of supporters came up with a light-hearted banner, saying: “Angela Merkel Thinks We’re At Work.”
