It’s almost three years since Martin Callinan resigned as Garda Commissioner following weeks of sustained criticism over his handling of whistle-blower complaints.

But rather than moving into a “new era” in the administration of justice, as promised when his successor was appointed, it seems the force isfalling deeper into the controversies that it has been desperately trying to consign to the past.

Commissioner Noirin O’Sullivan was at the centre of fresh allegations made in the Dáil aboutthe treatment of Sgt Maurice McCabe back in 2013 and 2014 – when he blew the whistle on malpractice in the force.
