Selfless rebels had real vision

Recent discourse in the media on the subject of the 1916 commemorations, has largely focused on the ‘un-democratic’ nature of the uprising. The assertion that the rebels were ‘a minority within a minority’ is certainly correct.

However, this disparagement of the Rising and its perceived ‘illegitimacy’ is part of a long tradition of denial of the simple fact that revolutions are not, as a rule, born in a vacuum.
