Johnson pledges top 'get Brexit done'

Boris Johnson will become the new British prime minister after winning the support of around two-thirds of Conservative Party members inthe race to succeed Theresa May.

Johnson took 92,153 votes, with Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt receiving 46,656. He will become prime minister on Wednesday.

Speaking after the vote was announced, he said he would bring “a new spirit of can-do” to the country, adding “we are going to get Brexit done”.

But he acknowledged there would be people who would question the wisdom of the decision to back him as leader. Johnson, whose imminent election and readiness to contemplateleaving the EU without a deal had already triggered some ministerial resignations, said he would build his new cabinet team over the coming days.
