Stephen Kinsella: The banking inquiry will seek to understand how the crisis that led to the 2008 bank guarantee developed from as far back as 1992. But can its members resist the temptation to engage in political grandstanding?

The Oireachtas Banking Inquiry was formally established last week. This is historic stuff. It is the first inquiry set up by the government under the new Inquiries, Privileges and Procedures Act, an act passed because it lost the referendum designed to grant powers to make findings of fact.
