Government baulks at Siptu call for 5 per cent pay rise
The government has pushed back against Siptu’s call for a 5 per cent national pay rise for public and private sector workers by warning that the economic recovery is still “fragile”.
It is a sign of the intense pressure that will be placed on the government ahead of next year’s general election after years of pay cuts for workers in the public and private sectors.
But a government spokesman warned that the economic recovery was “still fragile”.
“We need to be realistic about pay issues and remain competitive,” he said.
