'Finding a new garda chief won't be easy'

The political narrative is now dictating that the net must be cast beyond the ranks of An Garda Síochána, writes Hugh O'Connell

Last week the government had well-rehearsed arguments as to why sacking Nóirín O’Sullivan as Garda Commissioner would be a bad idea.

Several government figures argued that O’Sullivan’s departure would have little impact or benefit during a delicate period for An Garda Síochána with emerging scandals and a series of external reviews under way. “It’ll create one more problem, you’ll have a scandal ridden force with no leader,” said one source.
