Fine Gael senator Jerry Buttimer is in line to chair the controversial cross-party committee on abortion.
The Citizens’ Assembly has recommended radical changes to the state’s constitutional ban on abortion to provide for terminations without restrictions up to 12 weeks of pregnancy. This would require a referendum on the Eighth Amendment, which bans abortion in almost all circumstances.
