EU promises full backing on the border, but its officials are preparing for the worst

If the British government crashes out with no deal or a hard Brexit, the border will become an EU frontier which we will be obliged to enforce

EU officials in Brussels are resigned to the fact that not much is going to happen at this week’s ‘crunch summit’ of EU leaders. They are growing wearily familiar with deadlines being missed every step of the way. The issue of the Irish border was to have been sorted by now. Instead it is going to drag on till the next summit of EU leaders in October and even potentially to an emergency summit in December.
