Education minister aims to cut primary pupil-teacher ratio

Education minister Jan O’Sullivan is seeking to tackle the problem of super-sized primary school classes in the budget.

She has asked officials in her department to carry out a costing exercise on lowering the pupil-teacher ratio of 28-to-1.

There are already almost a quarter of primary school children – or 121,000 – in classes of 30 or more.
