The last party leader to support a government in the “national interest” was Alan Dukes of Fine Gael, more than three decades ago. He came up with the so-called Tallaght Strategy in 1987, which saw him and his party prop up a minority Fianna Fáil government in return for it delivering reforms to rescue the economy.
