Drawing out the drama in politics

Examining our politicians’ mistakes through drama, rather than judging them though journalism, will give us a greater understanding of our nation

In 1969, Brian Friel wrote a satirical political drama, The Mundy Scheme, about the government trying to sell the West of Ireland to America as a cemetery.

He wrote it, he said, because we were “rapidly losing our identity as a people” and Ireland was “becoming a shabby imitation of a third-rate American state”.
