Paschal Donohoe has branded the European Union’s budget rules as “clearly inappropriate” for the Irish economy.

The finance minister said EU fiscal rules were not fit for purpose in an Irish context at this stage of the economic cycle and tasked his officials with reviewing “shortcomings” in the regulations which govern spending by member states.
